Sweating In The Spirit

Sweating In the Spirit is an exercise class held on Thursday evenings at the Frederick Douglass Center, 1001 Indiana Ave., Toledo, OH 43607, from 6p-7:00p.  This class is a total body workout, demonstrating high intensity, low intensity and chair assisted levels of impact.  There is a warm-up prior and a cool down following the workout. 

We educate on the importance of a living a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition, and overall wellness.  Qualified community members are invited to share their knowledge with a short presentation, at the end of class; Food samples are provided to illustrate food-prep ideas. Gifts/awards are presented at mid-course and at the end for improved outcomes.

We are promoting the Sweating in the Spirit course because of the many health benefits of physical exercise and overall wellness.

  • Reduces risk of developing diabetes
  • Reduces risk of developing High Blood Pressure
  • Helps reduce blood pressure in people that already have it
  • Reduces risk of developing colon cancer

  • Helps to control weight
  • Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints
  • Helps seniors become stronger, more flexible and increases balance ​

We offer a variety of health related, educational classes and physical activities such as nature walks, nutrition education, how to use positive affirmations as well as quarterly Know Your Numbers clinics. One of the most important benefits of the Know Your Numbers clinic is prevention and knowledge about your body composition. Knowledge about yourself is self-empowerment.

The assessment includes qualified nursing staff from a local hospital and the use of a body composition monitor to fine-tune your fitness program by monitoring progress of muscle mass, weight, body fat percentage, body water percent, body mass index, bone mass, visceral fat and more.
